"How long have you thought about this?" Clint whispers into the setting sun once he’s woken up from a doze for the sixth time; the question has been rattling in his brain since the shower, but he’s not had the chance to voice it.
"Since the day you and Barnes kissed. Evidently, Steve found him shortly after you pulled your disappearing act, and Barnes spilled everything. Steve went to Natasha to find out where you were, she got the details and told me.” Phil tilts his head, eyes narrowing. “I probably wasn't as surprised as I should have been, though.”
Clint buries his face against Phil's chest and presses his fingertips firmly into Phil's arm. “I'm sorry for, for not being able to come out and tell you the truth.”
“I've known you for far too long to expect you to react to situations like the average person would. I forgive you,” he adds in a soft voice, and Clint grins, heart less heavy now than it has been in a long time.
The room is quiet, bathed in golden-orange, and Clint finds himself dozing off again. Between the warmth and solidity of Phil next to him and the peacefulness and stability of their relationship back intact, there's not much that Clint has to worry about right now. Even the prospect of having to talk to Barnes isn't as frightening as it was before Phil showed up this morning. But… there is something in the back of his mind that demands attention.
“Are you sure?"
“About you and Barnes? If it makes you happy, yes. I've not been more sure of anything. All I have ever wanted, during our entire relationship, was to make you happy, and well, making you choose which of us you said goodbye to would be counterproductive. It would make you miserable.”
“But?”
Phil waits until Clint has shifted to look up at him before his lips quirk, and, voice silky-smooth, he murmurs, “It wasn't Captain America who was the star of my teenage fantasies.”

Clint Barton has always known he's not worth the air he breathes, the space he takes up. But somehow, he still manages to find himself on a team of superheroes and in a very stable relationship with Phil fuckin' Coulson. Which... It's great. Really great. Seriously, he couldn't be happier. Except then the universe (or, really, a jilted demigod) has to screw them all over. Clint thought he was ready - he's seen so many teammates die in the line of duty - but nothing could have ever prepared him for all of this.

When James "Bucky" Barnes, the legendary Winter Soldier himself, finally comes in from hunting down HYDRA by himself, Clint takes it upon himself to help the man get acclimated to his new life as a free man instead of a weapon of war. Unfortunately, it turns out that maintaining a friendship with an ex-assassin is harder than it appears to be, especially when pesky feelings get involved.
